Before he created the Sopranos, David Chase was not having a good time. He had TV work on the Rockford files and Kolchak but was mostly a case of being a grumpy diamond in the rough. Somehow his talent and frustration and familiarity with the form gave birth to the Sopranos. The rest is history, but it wasn’t guaranteed.
What Chase did bears study for those of us who want to own our own enterprise. Doesn’t matter if you’re creating fiction, nonfiction, self-help or fitness material.
Here’s the nugget: He took his understanding of TV drama and mobster movies and created something new. As a result, the Sopranos looks like a copy while being something original. It is an iteration and a classic.
All of us are working with material that has already been created before. Fitness stuff goes back a couple thousand years. Self-help is basically religion. The list goes on. There is no room for despair.
You are creating something new based on what has come before. Your goal is to understand the form and make it feel like a new invention. It has to have enough of the known so people will be drawn in and have enough of an original to keep them interested and for it to become it’s own classic.
