Every couple years we all see it – a person who doesn’t appear to have much, if any talent becomes world famous and/or rich for something. The general public sees it most often in entertainment because that is so visible. Think Madonna and Kim Kardashian.
But it also happens in politics, and business and every field of endeavor. The common person will grumble and say, “they have no talent.” And while this is quite often true in the literal sense, to harbor such an idea is a fool’s trap.
The fact is, Madonna had a burning drive to become a famous entertainer. There are stories, but at this point they are 40 years old and no ones cares. She is Madonna. I personally admire Kim Kardashian as a business genius. But beyond the business savvy, there’s not much there. See my point?
I have seen it in business firsthand. Absolute boneheads running the show. But I do not fall into the trap of thinking they don’t have a talent. They have drive. They have determination. They have a kind of work ethic. And they are always shrewd.
Sometimes “dumb” people stay in the game long enough to get lucky. Often they maneuver or wait for someone to fail and feast on their bones. And sometimes they steal. You need more than talent to succeed in anything.
One of the first things you need is to understand there are many ways to succeed and being small-minded is a guarantee you don’t have what it takes. If you see someone “make it” with no discernible talent, instead of dismissing them make it a case study.
You can probably learn more from them than you can from idolizing a genius.
In the meantime, ask yourself if you are doing everything you can to make your enterprise a success – especially the non-core attributes such as force of will and looking for openings.
Sometimes the most genius, no talent thing you can do is keep at it until your moment arrives. To learn how to package your drive to create a business into a form that works, check out our book, How to Create Million Dollar Products.
