Million dollar products share more than a simple formula.
Every one of them, in their own way, gives the customer something that becomes part of their imagination.
The best way for me to show you is compare two very different products.
The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches by Joe Karbo promises the idea that people can be financially successful. That there is a secret, a previously unknown way to achieve wealth.
The Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey seduces their customer into believing that there is a supernatural world they can join and therefore enjoy itS benefits.
Each of these products shares the million-dollar formula.
Each of them also provides the customer with a reality bubble.
That is, a place where they can go with their imagination and believe in something greater than themselves. Something that is more interesting and dynamic and exciting and perhaps even more dangerous than their normal life.
People want the reality bubble.
It is present in all successful mass market products as well as mass movements. It often cannot be quantified. You cannot see it. There is nothing to touch.
But there is a space in the customers imagination who believe it to be real.
It is often rooted in reality but the customers imagination fills in the blanks.
That is why really successful products promise glorious rewards and a bright future. That is why they say there is a secret, that is why they invite you to invite you to join their insider club.
And it does not have to be fraudulent or harmful. We have a little music school. It is decorated like an old-fashioned schoolhouse. The instruction is first-rate and the experience is enjoyable. It is pleasing to look at from the outside. It is in the middle of town and even people who are not customers remark fondly about its existence.
Families who take lessons there are happy to be part of it. And while the music instruction is real and the decorations are real and the teachers are real there is something extra. It has become a thing that exists in reality while simultaneously occupying a place in people’s imagination.
And this is what you are aiming for when you create a million dollar product. You want a big advertising message and a big product AND you want there to be an invitation to experience something in the imagination.
Another way to think about it is that your product and your advertising is a jumping off point for people’s imaginations to take over.
